More planning

Character

Solid plans are the foundation of any project. I’ve spent the last week doing just that - filling the holes in our internal wiki which lays out the plans for the Rituals of the old.

The wiki is life, the wiki is love. It will tell us what the game will be like and what kind of technical details shall we have. Without a proper ground work the project would have nothing to stand on.

Our goal is to have a working client by the end of this month. By working I mean that it will not crash when starting it and we can actually move in a simple scene with data processed from the server.

Basically it will be a simple flat world with probably static player model with no animation and no collision detection. But it will be a start.

Art

It’s becoming more and more clear to me that we need a dedicated artist on board to carve out and define the details of our artistic style. If I have to do it myself, I will, but my time would be better used on more general things since I’m not very good with a pen.

Concept art plays an important role in game development and makes 3D modelers’ lives that much easier.

Permissions

Lately I’ve been designing a basis for a permission system for Rituals of the old. It should be fairly powerful and well designed.

You will be able to have control on a global scale and on a local scale over groups and individuals. For example if you wanted to you could modify permissions of all members of the bakers group when they enter a bakery. Or all the homeless people in a certain city. And so on.

You will also be able to configure the behaviour of mobile entities through their permissions globally or locally, ie. you can prevent aggressive behaviour in certain areas or prevent the mobs from breaking stuff, using magic, etc.

Other progress

TVdata is working on clothes for the player model. We should have some renders soon of the camp fire scene. The lighting will be a bit different in the final game, but otherwise you should get a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Please give us feedback! We don’t get nearly enough feedback at the moment. There have been suggestions but not much feedback on our current ideas and models. We’d love to hear from you.

No new images yet, sorry. We hope to have something up soon.
